If you want a tablet but don't have hundreds of dollars to throw around, you've probably considered Amazon's Fire devices. The Amazon Fire HD 10 is the largest and best of its Fire tablet range. It doesn't sound like a bargain like the Fire HD 8 for $ 80 or the Fire 7 for $ 50, but a 10.1-inch screen for just $ 150 is remarkable. Amazon has also made some welcome improvements over the 2017 model, including a little more grunt under the hood – in terms of both computing power and battery life – and switching to USB-C for faster and easier charging.

I finally chose Asphalt 8: Airborne – Asphalt 9 hasn't made it to the Amazon store yet – and I played Minecraft. The Fire HD 10 has enough muscle to play games, but this is a weak point compared to high-end tablets like the iPad or the Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e.

It is possible to load the Google Play Store on a Fire tablet, but it requires a little technological know-how. If you know you're not happy with the Amazon ecosystem, it may be better to buy another tablet.

While gaming quickly chews through the battery, streaming and reading movies doesn't seem to work. It's the type of device you'll likely be using at home most of the time anyway, but it's nice that it can easily guide you through a long-haul flight.

Even better, we now have a USB-C port. The charging cable is much easier to connect and charges faster. Amazon only offers a 9 watt charger included. It takes approximately four hours to fully charge the Fire HD 10. However, you can use a 15-watt charger with a USB-C to USB-C cable and charge it in three hours. There is a reasonable chance that you will already have one if you recently bought a new phone to have. I was able to use my Pixel 4 charger for better results.
